Cigarettes After Sex
Cigarettes After Sex arrived with an almost perverse commitment to slowness at a moment when music was accelerating in every direction, and "K." is perhaps the most complete expression of their aesthetic project. The guitars are so drenched in reverb they lose their percussive attack entirely, becoming more like tonal weather than instrumentation — something you exist inside rather than listen to. The tempo is barely a tempo at all, more like a continuous sustained moment. Greg Gonzalez's voice occupies a high, androgynous register that feels suspended between genders and between states of wakefulness, his delivery so flat and intimate it sounds like he is narrating a dream he is still inside. There is almost no dynamic movement — the song starts at a certain emotional temperature and holds it without crescendo or release, which creates a tension that has nowhere to go and therefore becomes its own form of ecstasy. The lyric circles a specific person with a kind of obsessive tenderness, cataloguing the sensory details of intimacy — particular gestures, particular places — the way memory does when it has latched onto something it refuses to let become abstract. This song emerged from a New York underground scene that was quietly rehabilitating ambient and dream pop away from irony and back toward earnestness. It is a 3am song, a song for lying in the dark after something significant has happened or almost happened, when the body is still registering the presence of another person and the mind doesn't want to let the feeling resolve into sleep.
