Antidawn EP

The 2022 Antidawn EP represented the most significant evolution in Burial's practice since his early material — abandoning residual dance music structures entirely in favor of long-form ambient compositions that owe more to ECM Records and late Talk Talk than to UK garage's rhythmic DNA. The production operates at glacial pace, building emotional environments rather than rhythmic structures, with tracks running long enough to change the listener's relationship with time itself. Vocal fragments appear more prominently than in earlier work but remain processed, distorted, suggesting transmission across vast distance or years of degraded storage. There is a pandemic-era quality to the material — music made in isolation, processing collective trauma through sound — though Burial never addresses circumstances directly, maintaining the oblique approach that gives his work its durability. The EP functions as a suite, tracks building cumulative emotional weight through their sequencing and the slow accumulation of textural detail. Moments of unexpected warmth punctuate the generally contemplative atmosphere, making the overall emotional register genuinely complex rather than uniformly resigned. This is music for extended private listening, for sitting with feelings that resist easy categorization.
