"Beachfires" arrives from Burial's 2015 EP as one half of a long-form ambient diptych, stretching into double-digit minutes of gradual, almost geological transformation. Where much of his earlier work contained remnants of recognizable rhythm structures, this piece surrenders those almost entirely, becoming instead a series of textural events: thick synthetic drones that mutate at the pace of weather changing, processed vocal fragments so abstracted they read as pure timbre rather than language, and low-frequency pulses that arrive at irregular intervals like waves rather than beats. The emotional register is desolate but not hostile — it suggests open space more than enclosed urban darkness, something like a shoreline at the wrong time of year, the embers of a fire that's mostly ash. Production-wise, the piece rewards high-volume listening where its sub-bass movements become physical, though it's equally compelling at low volume as a kind of ambient presence. Culturally, it represents Burial at his most expansive and least obviously UK garage-adjacent — the compression and crackle remain as sonic signatures, but the architecture has shifted toward something more influenced by late Talk Talk or ambient industrial traditions. A meditation rather than a journey, best experienced in solitude, lying flat, with no agenda for the next ninety minutes. The title earns itself by the end.
