Memory as subject produces a specific kind of musical form in Tale of Us's hands — not the archive but the forgetting, not what is preserved but the decay at the edges of preservation. Synthesizer lines are processed with the kind of subtle pitch instability that suggests something held at a distance, the sonic equivalent of a photograph left in light too long. The rhythmic pulse is present but treated with unusual restraint, keeping the track from resolving into pure ambient abstraction while refusing the full commitment to dance music's demands. Harmonic movement is slow and deliberate, each chord change carrying the weight of a decision. There are melodic fragments that recur in variation, the same phrase remembered imperfectly across the track's duration — a formal enactment of the title's subject. Italian music culture's relationship to the past is complex and omnipresent, and this production seems to absorb some of that ambient relationship to history, to the accumulated weight of time. Best experienced in darkness, eyes closed, in a state of active recollection.
