YMO's cover of Martin Denny's 1959 exotica classic completes a cultural feedback loop that elevates the exercise far beyond tribute or parody. Denny's original drew from American fantasies of Asian exoticism; YMO's response — a Japanese band reimagining American fantasies of Japan through purely electronic means — closes the circuit with genuine critical intelligence. The production strips Denny's lush orchestral arrangement to synthetic essentials, revealing the melodic skeleton beneath the tiki-bar surface and giving it a sharper, more genuinely alien quality in the process. The "exoticism" the original constructed through theatrical means becomes actually strange when rendered in purely electronic timbres. Takahashi's drum machine programming adds urgency the languid original never possessed. What Denny imagined, YMO corrects by making it real — or rather, makes the point that the correction is itself a new fantasy. The irony is productive rather than merely clever: genuine affection for the source material coexists with critical distance, which is how good cultural criticism works. Best experienced alongside the Denny original for full appreciation of what the transformation accomplishes and what it reveals.
