Cull Ficle

Asian Glow's "Cull Ficle" is bedroom recording as a form of controlled demolition — Gyungmin Shin builds a song out of guitars that seem to be recorded through a broken window, all clipped transients and midrange grit, then buries the melody underneath until it has to fight its way up. The production is deliberately unhandsome: distortion that isn't glossy shoegaze wash but something closer to a blown speaker, drum machines that sit too loud, layers stacked past the point where they resolve into anything clean. The emotional weather is adolescent panic recollected without the flattering distance — self-loathing that curdles into something almost funny, then back again. Shin's vocal is thin and half-buried, more presence than performance, the sound of someone who never expected to be listened to closely. The lyrics work in fragments rather than arguments, circling ideas of unworthiness and the exhausting labor of being perceived. It matters that this came out of Korea's DIY emo underground rather than the Midwest tradition it draws from — the influence is unmistakable but the isolation is native, a scene of one person and an interface. Best encountered at 3am with headphones on, when the noise stops sounding like a barrier and starts sounding like the honest version of the room.
