Teen Troubles
The Black Skirts
One of the more structurally energetic entries in The Black Skirts' catalog, "Teen Troubles" captures the specific flavor of adolescent distress — not crisis, but the low-grade anxiety of a self in formation that doesn't yet have the vocabulary for what it's experiencing. The production has a slightly brighter character than much of 조혜준's work — more guitar presence, a rhythm section that carries some of the nervous energy of the title's subject — but it never tips into pastiche. He navigates the adolescent experience with adult understanding but adolescent sympathy, the difficult middle position all good coming-of-age art must occupy. The lyrics are lightly comic without being dismissive: these troubles are real, but seen from temporal distance they acquire an absurdist clarity. The Korean cultural context adds a specific valence — adolescence in South Korea carries pressures around academic performance and social conformity that give "trouble" particular character — but the emotional terrain is legible across contexts. Best heard by anyone who is either in the middle of their teen troubles or just far enough out to start laughing at them.
