Space

Richter's Space inhabits the condition its title names — not the astronomical space of popular imagination but interior space, the quality of openness that certain music can produce in the listener's mind. The piano moves in long, widely-spaced arpeggios that leave plenty of room between notes, while strings sustain and slowly shift below, creating an environment rather than an event. The production is notable for what it omits: no dramatic gestures, no rhythmic insistence, no foreground-background distinction — everything is held at roughly equal distance and given equal weight. The emotional experience is decompression: the gradual release of mental density that happens when the listener stops anticipating what will come next and begins simply inhabiting what is present. Richter's compositional method reflects his sustained engagement with minimalism while departing from the motorik repetition of early minimalist practice — the music breathes rather than pulses. Culturally it belongs to a strain of post-Glass, post-Pärt concert music that takes contemplation as both method and subject, music literally designed to slow the listener down. Its listening context is any situation where the ordinary compression of daily experience needs relief: long stretches of air travel, convalescence, the early morning before the world reconstitutes its demands.
