Wiltzie and O'Halloran generate a specific kind of beautiful devastation: music that makes the experience of loss feel enormous and therefore somehow appropriate to the actual scale of what is being lost. Without text, the piece creates a narrative entirely through orchestral gesture — the tentative beginning, the gathering of emotional mass, the arrival that is simultaneously a departure, the silence after. The cultural context is deliberately universal rather than specific: this is music designed to accompany the human experience of ending, and it succeeds by refusing to locate that experience in any single tradition or geography.
