The coil's energy, held compressed and released in a single sudden movement — "Springs" works with that mechanical principle structurally, building tension through patient repetition and releasing it at exactly the moment the floor has reached maximum anticipation. Snaith's Daphni project reflects his years of experience as a working DJ, and tracks like this demonstrate how different that knowledge is from studio composition: DJs think in sets and rooms and bodies, in the relationship between one track and the next, in how energy accumulates and must be managed across an evening's arc. "Springs" functions within that context as architectural element in a longer journey rather than standalone artifact, its function inseparable from its place in sequence. The production is characteristically clean for Daphni — sounds placed with care but without Caribou's elaborate textural density, every element earning presence through functional contribution to the groove. The water imagery connects back to Caribou's aquatic aesthetic while being deployed in a completely different mode: not immersion and drift but stored energy and release, potential becoming kinetic, the coiled spring extended to its limit and then, finally, let go at exactly the right moment.
