Floating Points
"Movement 1" establishes the harmonic and emotional universe of "Promises" with extraordinary patience and confidence — the opening gesture of a piece that knows it has 46 minutes and intends to use every one of them meaningfully. A repeating string figure introduces the central melodic cell, something between a lullaby and a chaconne, a ground over which everything that follows will be constructed. The London Symphony Orchestra strings enter with a restraint that takes the breath away — pianissimo, almost apologetic, suggesting a sound more than asserting it — while Floating Points' electronics create an atmosphere around them that feels neither intrusive nor merely ambient, more like weather than accompaniment. Pharoah Sanders is present but hovering, his saxophone audible at the edges before he commits to melody, a master demonstrating the power of what is withheld.
