Where "Movement 1" establishes the terrain with circumspection, "Movement 2" begins the first tentative steps across it. The string ostinato continues, its repetitions now more familiar and therefore more hypnotic, the kind of pattern that stops being heard consciously and starts being felt as atmospheric pressure. Pharoah Sanders draws closer to the melodic center, his tenor saxophone beginning to engage the material more directly — testing it, circling it, the way a jazz master approaches an improvisation: never carelessly, always from a position of deep listening. Sam Shepherd's electronics introduce subtle harmonic shifts beneath the surface, barely perceptible on first hearing but felt in the body as changes in the emotional temperature of the room. There is something about this movement that captures the quality of accumulation — the way meaning builds not through dramatic events but through the patient layering of small recognitions, each repetition of the string figure adding a new stratum of emotional weight to all the ones that came before. The tempo is deliberately unrushed, almost geological in its sense of time, and this is not a flaw but the point: "Promises" asks the listener to recalibrate their relationship to duration, to find in slowness not boredom but revelation.
