Floating Points
"Movement 7" initiates the gathering process that will carry "Promises" to its conclusion, a movement that has the quality of late afternoon light — already turning toward evening but still fully itself, the particular beauty of things that are beginning to end. Sanders' playing takes on a retrospective quality here, as though the saxophone is now remembering themes established in earlier movements rather than inventing new ones, returning to melodic material as an elder returns to acquired wisdom: not for lack of new things to say but because what has already been said continues to deepen with repetition. The string writing is more openly emotional now — the restraint of the opening movements has been worn away by everything that came before, and the orchestra is permitted to speak with its full voice without the early diffidence. Shepherd's electronics have become fully integrated into the texture rather than functioning as counterpoint to the acoustic elements, the electronic and orchestral material now so intertwined that separating them feels artificial. There is a quality of gathering here that is not yet farewell but is beginning to look in that direction — the way a great conversation, an hour before its end, starts to feel the shape of its own completion.
