Movement 8

By "Movement 8," the harmonic material of "Promises" has been so thoroughly explored, turned over and examined from every angle across seven preceding movements, that it has achieved what few musical ideas ever reach: the status of the genuinely familiar in the deepest sense, not merely the heard-before but the felt-as-one's-own. The string ostinato that opened the suite returns here in a form that feels simultaneously unchanged and completely transformed by everything that occurred in between — the same notes carrying utterly different weight, the way a phrase at the beginning of a great novel means something different on the last page. Sanders plays with extraordinary economy in this movement, each note preceded by silence that feels loaded with the music's entire history, each phrase a distillation of everything the saxophone has expressed across the suite. There is no grandstanding here, no summative statement or recapitulative fanfare — instead something quieter and more honest: the acknowledgment that what has been expressed has been expressed, that nothing remains but the most careful tending of what is left. Shepherd's production is at its most invisible here, which is to say at its most masterful.
