Hours
Four Tet
Time is the subject and the method. "Hours" extends itself over a duration that justifies its title — not because it is literally hours long, but because it inhabits time differently than pop music's compressed attention economy, demanding a willingness to exist in sound longer than contemporary culture typically encourages. Four Tet constructs the piece from elements that cycle at different rates, the resulting interference patterns shifting slowly enough that tracking changes requires sustained attention across minutes rather than seconds. Delicate percussion figures establish an underlying pulse while synthesizer harmonics — warm, sustained, slightly modulated — create a canopy of sound that filters the rhythmic activity below. Hebden's sampling practice brings organic textures into the electronic environment: processed voices, acoustic instrument fragments, field recordings transformed enough to lose their original context while retaining something of their original warmth. The emotional character is meditative and open, suggesting the kind of time that passes meaningfully without notable incident — an afternoon of quiet activity, hours accumulating into something that feels full without being eventful. There's a quality of acceptance in the music, of being present to duration rather than impatient to reach its end. As a listening experience it asks something relatively unusual of contemporary audiences: simply to be somewhere, with nothing else requiring attention, for a while.
