"Timeline" moves through its four minutes like warm water, Alexander Brettin's butter-soft voice floating over production that is deliberately, lovingly unhurried. Mild High Club build their sound from the softer end of early-seventies soft rock — Steely Dan's studio precision without the cynicism, Bread's melodic ease without the syrup — and "Timeline" is perhaps their most perfectly realized example of the form. The guitar tones are plush and round, the chord progressions just complex enough to feel sophisticated without ever becoming academic. Lyrically, Brettin sketches a relationship in oblique brushstrokes, talking around emotion rather than into it, which produces a curious intimacy — the listener fills in what isn't said. It's music that rewards a certain passivity: playing it while doing something else entirely, letting it exist in your peripheral awareness until suddenly a line or a chord arrives and you stop what you're doing. The whole album captures a specific midday feeling — not productive, not restless, just suspended — and "Timeline" is its clearest embodiment. It suits Sunday afternoons where the light is good and nothing needs to happen.
