Lighthouse

The title suggests navigation, directionality, the beam of a lighthouse cutting through dark water — but the music refuses those metaphors, offering instead something that circles without arriving. A single guitar figure recurs in slightly varied form, less like a theme than like a thought one keeps returning to from different angles, the way the mind worries a question it cannot resolve. The voice is present but distant, mixed low enough that lyrics feel incidental to the sound's total effect. What strikes most immediately is the quality of the silence around the notes — Harris understands negative space in a way that few guitarists do, treating the decay of each chord as compositional material in itself. There is a coastal desolation to the sound that makes the title feel accurate in a different register than the nautical: a lighthouse is also a place of beautiful isolation, purpose defined by the surrounding dark rather than by what lies ahead. The recording aesthetic — warm, slightly degraded, tape-adjacent even if not tape — positions the piece in a temporal elsewhere, neither nostalgic nor contemporary, simply existing at a slight remove from any identifiable present.
