Pinnacles
Four Tet
Peaks and summits — the pinnacles of the title suggest achievement and altitude, and the music reaches accordingly, constructing a sense of elevation through the gradual accumulation and intensification of layered material. Kieran Hebden assembles the track with characteristic patience, beginning at a lower register of density and adding harmonic and rhythmic material in increments that feel like gaining altitude on a long climb: the progress real but never sudden, the view expanding by degrees. The emotional register combines the forward momentum of anticipation with the satisfaction of arrival, the track building toward moments of harmonic fullness that pay off the patience of the approach without overstating their own significance. Percussion is present and rhythmically active, more engaged with dance music conventions than Hebden's more abstract work — there's a groove here that could function on a floor while remaining equally suited to focused home listening. Synthesizer textures carry melodic content through several evolutionary stages, the harmonic material thickening as the track develops before thinning again, the overall shape following a natural contour of accumulation and release. Production is bright and spacious, the mix favoring the upper frequencies where melodic material lives, the overall sound quality clean and detailed. A track that earns its title — music that reaches somewhere and, briefly, arrives.
