Untangle
Four Tet
The title promises resolution — an unknotting, a coming-free — and the music delivers something of that promise, though not through simplification. "Untangle" works through a process of clarification that emerges from complexity: as elements are introduced and woven together, relationships between them become more rather than less legible, until what initially seemed like density becomes a kind of ordered transparency. The rhythm is one of the more danceable in Hebden's catalog, anchored enough to provide genuine forward motion while retaining the exploratory quality that distinguishes his work from functional dancefloor music. Synths and samples interlock with puzzle-piece precision, suggesting that their arrangement is not accidental but discovered — as if Hebden found these relationships rather than invented them. The emotional register is optimistic without being naïve, the kind of optimism that comes from having worked through difficulty rather than having avoided it. Production is crisp and detailed, each element clearly placed in a spatial field that gives the music room to breathe and evolve. As a listening experience it is satisfying in the way resolution always is: the mind wants patterns and wants them clarified, and this track performs that function with genuine grace.
