Press Your Number
TAEMIN
"Press Your Number" catches TAEMIN in a more playful disposition than his later work would allow, propelled by an upbeat electronic-funk hybrid that retains sophistication while genuinely swinging. The production has warmth that his darker material deliberately avoids — punchy synth bass, bright melodic hooks, a groove that suggests 1980s funk filtered through contemporary Seoul sensibility. TAEMIN's vocal performance here is looser, more conversational, with a kind of infectious eagerness that suggests he's enjoying the departure from his usual controlled intensity. Released in 2016 as his first full Korean solo album title track, "Press Your Number" functioned partly as a declaration of artistic range — that the performer of "Danger" and "Ace" could also hold an exuberant pop song without losing his distinctiveness. The lyric is straightforwardly about pursuit: he wants someone's number, he'll keep calling, the momentum of interest is irresistible to him and he'd like to make it irresistible to them. There's a confidence that doesn't tip into arrogance, a brightness that doesn't sacrifice musical craft. This works as daytime driving music, as something to put on when you want energy without emotional weight, as a reminder that idols at their best can simply make excellent pop songs.
