Poppy's pivot into metal was prepared for by years of deliberately unsettling pop — her earlier work always had an uncanny quality, the cheerfulness slightly off, the sweetness engineered rather than organic — and "I Disagree" is the record where that unease finds its proper instrument. The title track opens with a riff that could belong to any contemporary metal release before Poppy's voice arrives, impossibly bright and controlled, singing lyrics about dissolution and defiance with the same tone she might use for a pop chorus about summer. The production is genuinely heavy, not a pop-inflected approximation: guitar tones thick and downtuned, the mix clear but substantial. The lyrical premise is refusal — the refusal to agree, to comply, to be contained — delivered in a vocal character that makes the defiance sound cheerful and therefore stranger. It belongs to a lineage of artists who have used the dissonance between sonic warmth and dark content as a critical tool, but Poppy pushes the contrast further into genuine heaviness than almost anyone before her attempted. The result is a song that is simultaneously poppy and menacing, each quality making the other more extreme. Best for car windows down, turned up past reasonable.
