Viaticum

Esbjörn Svensson Trio's "Viaticum" carries its etymology honestly — a viaticum is provision for a journey, traditionally the last rites administered to the dying, and the piece has that quality of something carefully prepared for an unknown passage. The Swedish trio's production is characteristically intimate and contemporary: Svensson's piano is close-miked and unhurried, each note distinct but connected to its neighbors by deliberate voicing rather than velocity. Dan Berglund's double bass is warm and resonant in a way that acoustic bass rarely achieves on record, and Magnus Öström's drumming operates with the restraint of someone who has learned that silence is also rhythm. Together they create a sound that is unmistakably jazz but informed by Scandinavian minimalism and the emotional directness that characterizes Nordic popular music more broadly — no irony, no protective cleverness, just the feeling made available. The harmonic language is modal rather than bebop-derived, and the piece breathes without pulse in ways that suggest water more than dance. Svensson, who died in 2008, left an extraordinary body of work, and "Viaticum" carries within it both its immediate emotional content and the retroactive weight of knowing it was made by someone already living toward absence. That knowledge changes the listening, enriches it painfully, and that enrichment is honest.
