Despite its title, "Pop" is not a bid for mainstream accessibility — it is ScHoolboy Q using the word's multiple meanings to construct something deliberately contradictory. The pop of a gunshot. The pop of something bursting. The commercial pop frame being subverted from within. The production carries a glossy sheen over a fundamentally hard arrangement, hi-hats tumbling in patterns that suggest confidence, 808s calibrated for maximum physical impact. Q's voice sits in a harder register here than elsewhere on Blue Lips, the bars carrying more Compton specificity, the album's abstract tendencies giving way to something more directly confrontational. The hook functions almost as irony, catchiness weaponized against easy consumption.
