"Beautiful People" is a declaration of contentment from the outside — an anthem for not belonging to the aspirational crowds, for finding sufficiency and even superiority in ordinariness when it's shared with the right person. Ed Sheeran's production brings something notably sunnier into Khalid's characteristic introspective palette; the track is genuinely uptempo, carried by a bright acoustic guitar figure and a chorus built for open-air performance. Khalid's voice here is at its most relaxed and present, the familiar anxiety of his best work temporarily suspended in favor of something more settled and grateful. The "beautiful people" of the title are not admired but gently pitied — they have the markers of success and desirability and yet seem to inhabit those markers without the ease of genuine self-acceptance.
