Interpretation

Darker and more angular than much of their catalog, this track operates in the register of emotional confrontation rather than romantic longing. The production has more edge, guitars carrying tension that doesn't resolve into comfort, and Sanders sings with an urgency that suggests something has finally reached a breaking point. Lyrically the title is doing the heavy lifting — two forces in proximity, and the question of which one will survive. It's relationship music that doesn't romanticize the damage, that looks at the destructive potential of intimacy without flinching. The dynamic range is used strategically, quiet moments making the louder ones more effective. Best suited for the later stages of something difficult, when you've moved past hoping it gets better and are starting to understand what's actually happening.
