Interpretation

The cantata opens with a fanfare-like introduction that immediately establishes its urgency — "Wachet auf" means "wake up," and Bach takes the command literally, the music jolting upright before settling into one of the most architecturally perfect choruses in the Baroque choral literature. The melody, borrowed from a Lutheran hymn, is given to the tenors as a cantus firmus while the upper voices weave elaborate counterpoint around it, a compositional technique that makes the familiar strange again. BWV 140's central tenor-soprano duet, "Wenn kommst du, mein Heil," is perhaps even more famous than the opening chorus: a sinuous, dance-like interplay between the two voices suggesting mutual longing, the theological content (the soul awaiting its bridegroom) translated into music of surprising intimacy and sensuality. The bass aria "Mein Freund ist mein" continues this register, the bass voice speaking as Christ with a warmth that feels domestic rather than thunderously divine. The orchestration — oboes, strings, continuo — is spare enough that every line remains audible, a transparency characteristic of Bach's mature cantata writing.
