The Planets: Jupiter

The most immediately accessible movement from Holst's seven-movement orchestral suite depicts Jupiter not as a planet but as an archetype — the Bringer of Jollity, as the subtitle declares. It opens with a rhythmically punchy scherzo theme that bounces between brass and strings with infectious energy, building through accumulation until the center of the movement arrives: one of the most famous English melodies ever written, broad and hymn-like, rising in a sequence of dignified steps. This central tune was later set to words and became the patriotic song "I vow to thee, my country," which has permanently colored how British listeners hear it. The production is massive — full orchestra at its most confident, brass leading in the hymnic sections, strings racing in the outer movements. Emotionally it is warm, communal, celebratory in the most unironic sense. Culturally it represents a particular strain of Edwardian England: confident, expansive, not yet acquainted with the scale of what was coming.
