Rachmaninoff's last major orchestral work, composed in 1940 near the end of his life in American exile, carries the weight of everything he was leaving behind. The *Symphonic Dances* are named after a dance form but are not dances in any conventional sense — they are three movements of sustained orchestral argument, each one probing a different emotional register: an opening of tense rhythmic propulsion with a nostalgic saxophone melody buried in the middle, a second movement that takes waltz tempo and darkens it toward something between elegance and dread, and a closing movement that escalates from restless syncopation to a catastrophic final statement. Rachmaninoff quotes his own early compositions and the medieval *Dies Irae* plainchant in ways that feel like a man sorting through memories. The orchestration is at once lush and spare, showing a composer whose technique had become entirely transparent to his intentions. It is an essential late work from a Russian romantic stranded in modernity.
