Interpretation

Little Anthony and the Imperials' soul ballad becomes something altogether more nocturnal in Sergio Mendes's treatment of "Going Out of My Head." The original's doo-wop urgency is replaced by a slow-burning bossa nova pulse, and the obsessive emotional content — unable to stop thinking about someone, losing coherent function under the weight of longing — is paradoxically made more intense by the reduction in tempo. Lani Hall's vocal inhabits the desperation without performing it, which is the bossa nova approach to emotional material: the restraint increases rather than diminishes the feeling. The production is immaculate, each instrument placed with precision in a soundscape that is simultaneously lush and spacious. The horns that punctuate certain phrases have a cinematic quality, as though the emotion being described occasionally exceeds the available vocal register and spills into orchestral commentary. This is the Mendes Brasil 66 formula at its most persuasive: demonstrating that sophistication and feeling are not in opposition, that the most refined musical settings can also be the most emotionally precise. A late-night recording, best heard when the mind is running its own version of what it describes.
