Interpretation

Two of the most technically accomplished voices ever deployed in Disney animation, Salonga's crystalline soprano and Kane's light floating tenor achieve a balance that Broadway casting rarely manages: neither overwhelms, neither defers, the pairing creating a genuine conversation rather than competition. Alan Menken's orchestration is sumptuous and carefully considered — beginning from a delicate piano introduction before building through full romantic swell with Middle Eastern instrumental colors woven precisely enough to honor the setting without reducing it to caricature. Lyrically, the song uses travel and discovery as romantic metaphor, each verse widening the world between two people, each chorus committing to the wonder of being genuinely changed by another person's perspective. The cultural context carries the original film's Orientalist complications, but the song itself reaches for something more universal about the way love expands perception. Technically, the modulation into the final chorus is one of the more skillfully earned moments in the Disney songbook. Best heard at altitude — literally airborne if possible.
