Richter's "Iconography" takes its title from the study of images and symbols, and the music itself functions like a series of visual archetypes translated into sound — recurring motifs with the weighted significance of images one has looked at for so long they have become more than their literal content. The piece has an unusual structural clarity: themes announced, developed, and returned to in altered states, as if the musical material is being examined from different angles over time. The harmonic language draws on both minimalism's repetitive accumulation and the romantic tradition's use of harmonic tension and release, sitting comfortably between these influences rather than resolving into either.
