Written during a cold Manhattan winter by John Phillips, who was homesick for California and broke, this song carries its longing in every layer of its construction. The four-part harmony — John, Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot, Michelle Phillips — is arranged with such precision that the voices blend into a single warm instrument rather than four separate ones, the intervals chosen to maximize that particular California-dreaming ache. A flute solo drifts through the arrangement like morning fog. The production, by Lou Adler, is immaculate folk-pop — acoustic guitar anchoring everything while the harmonies do the emotional lifting. Lyrically the song is more complicated than its sunlit reputation suggests: the narrator stops inside a church that is "safe and warm," and the preacher "likes the cold," which introduces a religious unease beneath the surface escapism. The dream of California is spiritual as much as geographical — a yearning for a different self in a different place.
