My Bloody Valentine
Two minutes of blissed-out disintegration from Loveless, and one of the record's few moments of something like uncomplicated joy. Kevin Shields' glide guitar bends the entire tonal center underfoot — the tremolo arm worked constantly so no chord holds still — and the effect is less a riff than weather. The mix buries everything in the same amber haze: drums thudding somewhere behind the guitars, bass felt more than heard, no reverb tail you can point to, just saturation. Bilinda Butcher's vocal floats on top, mixed so low and so soft that words dissolve into vowel shapes; the lyric may be about a lover on drugs, or about being looked at, or about nothing recoverable, and the ambiguity is deliberate design rather than laziness. My Bloody Valentine spent famously ruinous studio time achieving this, and the result rewrote what a guitar band could sound like — the entire shoegaze lineage and half of modern dream-pop descends from these textures. What makes this track distinct within the album is its lightness; where much of Loveless aches, this one drifts upward. Best on headphones, loud enough that the haze becomes physical, ideally while doing nothing at all, half-asleep in daylight.
