Interpretation

Commissioned for a grand peace celebration in London's Green Park in 1749 — and accompanied by actual fireworks, some of which went badly wrong — the *Fireworks Music* is Handel's most ceremonially outsized orchestral statement. The original scoring called for an ensemble of over a hundred wind and percussion players with no strings, a configuration designed for outdoor projection rather than concert-hall subtlety. The *Overture* that opens the suite is a massive French overture in two sections: a slow, dotted-rhythm introduction of almost architectural weight, followed by a fugal allegro that builds through imitation until the full ensemble joins in a declaration of pure civic triumph. Individual dances follow — a bourrée, two minuets — offering moments of relative charm before the concluding *La Réjouissance* returns to full celebration. Modern performances typically restore strings and reduce the ensemble, but the music retains its essential character: this is sound designed to fill enormous public space, to signal that something historically significant is being celebrated, to make the ordinary citizen feel the occasion in their chest.
