The title track of his 2018 album arrives in an unexpectedly stripped-down mode for an artist who'd built his reputation on ornate production and heavily armored irony. The arrangements are sparser, piano more central, the overall sound suggesting a hotel room at 3am rather than a concert hall. Tillman has described the album's origins in a period of genuine personal instability—checking into a hotel away from his marriage, the circumstances ambiguous—and this track carries that vulnerability more directly than his previous work. The protagonist is both chosen and condemned by divine attention, special in a way that's indistinguishable from punishment: it's a vision of election that collapses the distance between blessing and curse. The theological framework is worn lightly, used more as emotional shorthand than serious argument—capturing the particular delusion of crisis, the sense that one's suffering must have cosmic significance. Tillman's vocal performance is measurably less protected here than on Pure Comedy, the irony not entirely absent but no longer functioning as full armor. The production rewards the more intimate material with corresponding restraint. Best heard in the context of the album it opens, which collectively documents a period of unwanted self-examination.
