"Forgotten Eyes" is built around the elegiac — those particular faces from the past that time has rendered remote, people we once loved and gradually lost the ability to picture clearly. Lenker's vocals carry that specific Appalachian-inflected timbre she's developed, warm and slightly nasal, with a vibrato that enters unplanned and makes everything sound more mortal. The guitar work is layered with subtle reverb, giving the song more atmospheric depth than some of Big Thief's starker recordings — there's a quality of memory being acoustically enacted, the slight blurriness of recollection built into the production choices. Lyrically, the song is imagistic and associative, moving through natural imagery and human detail without forcing them into narrative: eyes become light becomes water becomes something unnamed. The emotional register is elegiac without tipping into grief — closer to gratitude, actually, the tenderness of having loved people even if the loving is past.
