修羅場

"修羅場" is Tokyo Jihen at their most theatrical and most vicious. Built around a lurching, cabaret-tinged arrangement — Izawa's piano stabbing in jagged chromatic runs, Hiizumi-era swagger in the rhythm section, guitar snarling at the edges — it recasts a domestic screaming match as vaudeville, a scene played on a stage with the audience invited to watch. The title means "a scene of carnage," Japanese slang for the moment a relationship's ugliness erupts in public, and Shiina Ringo performs it exactly that way: her voice slides from operatic vibrato to a hissed, guttural growl to a childlike coo within a single line, dragging vowels for maximum venom. She rolls her r's with the deliberate delinquency that was already her trademark. The lyric is jealousy staged as spectacle, all accusation and self-aware performance, the narrator perfectly conscious that she is playing a role even as she means every word. Coming just after Shiina retired her solo project to become a band member, it announced Tokyo Jihen as a vehicle for exactly this kind of controlled chaos — jazz musicians playing rock with a novelist's sense of scene.
