"푸르던" sits at the emotional floor of *CHAT-SHIRE*, an album otherwise full of arch, sideways playfulness. Its arrangement is a folk-leaning near-whisper: fingerpicked acoustic guitar, a slow, wandering bassline, faint strings and a distant electric guitar that never quite steps forward, all mixed dry and intimate so you hear fingers on strings. IU wrote it, and the vocal reflects an author's rather than a performer's approach — she sings low, unhurried, with almost no vibrato, letting phrases end flat and unadorned in a way that reads as exhaustion rather than technique. The title's "was blue" locks the whole song in past tense, and the lyric works through a fading relationship or fading self with the greenness of an earlier time held just out of reach; there's no accusation in it, only the mild horror of noticing something has already finished. Coming from a twenty-two-year-old at the height of scrutiny, it read as an unusually adult admission of depletion. This is a two-in-the-morning song, or a song for a long train ride through winter fields — best when nobody is going to ask you what's wrong.
