"Paparazzi" is Lady Gaga's most convincing argument that fame and romantic obsession are the same illness. It moves at a slower, heavier tempo than the rest of The Fame — a stalking mid-tempo pulse, a descending synth-string figure with a strangely mournful, almost Baroque quality, and a chorus that opens up into pure widescreen pop without ever losing the minor-key unease underneath. Rob Fusari and Gaga build it around ambiguity: the narrator promises to chase her lover "like a bunny," to be his "biggest fan," to follow him "until you love me," which is either devotion or a restraining-order deposition depending on the line reading. Her vocal is the key — cool and slightly flattened in the verses, adopting a mannered, nearly robotic diction, then blooming with real melodic warmth on "baby, there's no other superstar," so the sincerity arrives exactly where the delusion peaks. The Jonas Åkerlund video, with its murdered-and-resurrected starlet narrative, and the blood-soaked 2009 VMA performance turned the song into her thesis statement about celebrity as violence.
