A Question of Time
Depeche Mode
A hammering sequencer figure locks in from the first bar and barely relents — this is *Black Celebration*'s most propulsive track, built from clanging metallic samples, a stalking bass pulse, and a sense of forward motion closer to menace than to joy. Gahan's delivery is predatory and controlled, and the lyric earns the discomfort: an older narrator watching a fifteen-year-old girl, warning off the boys circling her while making clear he's counting down too. "It's a question of time" is not reassurance; it's a threat wearing concern's clothing, and Gore's willingness to write from inside that voice rather than above it is what gives the song its residue. The production, made with Gareth Jones in Berlin, is all hard surfaces and reverberant space — you can hear the room's cold. Live it became a set-closing juggernaut, faster and more brutal than the record, and it marked the moment Depeche Mode's darkness stopped being decorative. It's a driving song, genuinely — night highway, speed creeping up — and also the one you put on when you want pop music that refuses to make you comfortable about what it's describing.
