"Joromi" is Simi rewiring a piece of Nigerian musical history into a flirtation. The title nods to Sir Victor Uwaifo's 1960s highlife legend about an unbeatable warrior, but Simi flips the reference into a coy demand: she wants a lover who'll actually claim her, not circle indefinitely. The production is deliberately uncluttered — a plucked guitar hook that loops like a lullaby, soft mid-tempo percussion, a bassline that swings rather than pounds — closer to Afro-folk than club Afrobeats, which was itself a small act of defiance in 2017's radio landscape. Her vocal is the whole architecture: light, girlish, precisely pitched, sliding between English, Yoruba and pidgin with a conversational ease that makes the singing sound like teasing across a table.
