White Room

Pete Brown's lyric arrives fully formed and totally opaque — "in the white room with black curtains at the station" — a poem about a breakup and a train platform that never explains itself, and Cream play it like a fever. The intro is in 5/4, a wobbling, ceremonial figure with Ginger Baker's timpani-like toms crashing under Jack Bruce's viola drone, before the song lurches into a straight 4/4 for the verses. Bruce sings it in that piercing, almost operatic tenor, more Scottish folk singer than bluesman, and the melody keeps climbing where you expect it to fall. Clapton's wah-wah — one of the instrument's earliest great showcases — doesn't solo so much as answer every line, a crying second voice woven through the whole track and then let loose at the fade. Baker plays across the beat constantly, never keeping simple time, so the groove feels like it's toppling forward. The production is thick, murky, saturated with 1968 psychedelia but anchored by genuine blues muscle. It's the sound of a band about to fly apart and turning that tension into architecture.
