Rough Sleeper

"Rough Sleeper" is Burial working at a longer scale, thirteen minutes that behave less like a track than like a night with distinct hours. It begins in near-formless ambience, then a two-step pulse gathers, then — remarkably — a bright, almost euphoric synth line arrives, the closest he has come to writing something you could call uplifting. Halfway through, everything drops away for a stretch of pure atmosphere: rain, distant voices, a lighter, the hum of a room. Then it returns, transfigured. The vocal samples are gentler here than on Untrue, offering something closer to consolation than accusation, phrases about being close and being found. The title points at homelessness, and the track holds that weight without ever illustrating it — it is about the city's indifference and the small warmths that survive inside it. Culturally it marked Burial's shift away from album-length statements toward these sprawling, self-contained EP pieces where structure follows feeling rather than form. It rewards the full sit: put it on for the last leg of a long journey, or during the hour before dawn when you have given up on sleeping and decided to just watch the sky change instead.
