Interpretation

One of the most formally astonishing songs in Brazilian music, and one of the bleakest. Chico Buarque built the lyric on a rigid constraint: every line ends in a proparoxytone, a three-syllable stress, and the verses repeat with their final words shuffled so the same phrases keep recombining into new and worse meanings. The effect is mechanical, like bricks being laid — which is exactly the point. The song follows a construction worker through a single day: he kisses his wife as if she were the last time, eats his beans as if it were a machine, climbs the scaffolding, and falls into the street like a drunk, a package, a loose brick that interrupts traffic. Rogério Duprat's arrangement builds a colossal orchestral crescendo, strings and brass piling upward until the fall, then the terrible flat silence after. Chico's voice stays measured, almost clerical, refusing catharsis; the horror is in the accounting. Recorded in 1971 under the hardest years of the dictatorship, it reads as an indictment of a nation building monuments on top of invisible bodies. The final section grafts on "Deus lhe Pague," a sardonic litany of thanks. Listen to it whole, alone, with nothing else scheduled afterward — it is not background music, and it leaves a mark.
