Interpretation

From the Sparkle in the Rain album period, this track shows Simple Minds in their transitional phase — not quite the post-punk experimentalists of their early records, not yet the stadium maximalists they'd become. The production has both qualities simultaneously, guitars and synthesizers negotiating for priority, the rhythm section more textured and less polished than their later work. Kerr's delivery here is energized rather than declamatory, engaged rather than triumphant. The lyric concerns perception and illumination in a general sense — seeing clearly, breaking through surfaces — territory the band returned to repeatedly during this period. What distinguishes it from their more famous arena anthems is an underlying restlessness, the sense of a band still working out what it wants to become. In retrospect it reads as a transitional document, which gives it a different kind of interest than the fully-formed commercial peaks on either side of it. For fans who appreciate the messier, hungrier version of Simple Minds, it's essential. For listeners who came through the stadium work, it reveals the architecture underneath the polish.
