Evan Finds the Third Room

The earliest Khruangbin recordings feel like dispatches from somewhere unlocatable on any atlas — geographically promiscuous in their borrowings, temporally ambiguous, recorded with a fidelity that sounds expensive only in retrospect. This track in particular has the quality of music you find in a record shop you've wandered into in a foreign city, something that sounds vaguely familiar and deeply strange simultaneously. The Thai funk influence is most pronounced here — the modal guitar playing, the specific quality of the reverb, the way the groove has a foreign language's rhythmic accent. Laura Lee's bass is doing something genuinely unusual in the low register, not just holding the bottom but articulating a counter-melody that you follow as much as the guitar work above it. The percussion is minimal and uncluttered, giving the other elements maximum room to breathe. There are no vocals to speak of — this is an instrumental piece that doesn't feel their absence, which is the test of whether an instrumental truly works. Emotionally the piece occupies a strange liminal space: it's clearly experienced but with an emotional content that is difficult to name — somewhere between curiosity and recognition, like seeing a face in a crowd that you can't place. Best encountered on late-night walks in unfamiliar places, when the strangeness of being somewhere new is its own particular pleasure.
