Space Is Only Noise If You Can See

Nicolas Jaar was twenty years old when he made this, and it sounds like someone who had never been told what electronic music was supposed to do. The track moves through texture rather than structure — there is a pulse, but it recedes and surfaces unpredictably, as though breathing. Bass frequencies appear as physical events, low and slow, and above them Jaar scatters sounds that feel sourced rather than synthesized: distant voices caught mid-conversation, objects resonating, something that might be rain or tape hiss or both at once. The emotional register is profoundly uncertain — it induces a kind of productive unease, the sensation of standing in a space and not knowing its dimensions. There is a thesis embedded in the title: that space and silence are constructed by sensory ability, that absence is relative. The music performs this idea rather than illustrating it, creating a listening experience in which the gaps between sounds are as loaded as the sounds themselves. It belongs to a lineage of minimalist electronic composition — Reich, Eno, Oval — but arrives somewhere distinctly personal. This is music for a near-empty apartment at two in the morning, when the city's noise has finally dropped below the threshold of attention.
