Poor Leno

Röyksopp let the piano carry this one, which was not their usual instinct, and the restraint shows in the best way. "Poor Leno" operates at a slower emotional metabolism than most of the "Melody A.M." album — more deliberate, more willing to sit with feeling rather than carry it somewhere. A male vocal enters with a quality that is slightly weathered, slightly resigned, delivering lines about someone's life with a tenderness that never slides into sentimentality. The synths here are spacious, functioning as atmosphere rather than melody, with reverberant pads that seem to extend the room size on every beat. The arrangement is patient, building very gradually to a fuller texture without ever quite resolving the tension it generates. Emotionally, it touches the specific ache of watching someone you care for struggle — not crisis, but the ongoing quiet difficulty of certain lives. This is distinctly a night-time song, most suited to sitting alone after a social event has ended and the noise has cleared, when honest feeling becomes possible again. Röyksopp made other tracks that were more immediately striking, but few that stayed as long afterward.
