Where his earlier work stripped music down to essentials, here Einaudi builds outward. A gathering orchestral swell — strings rising in slow terraces, a cello line that pulls against the grain — surrounds the piano rather than accompanying it, and the cumulative effect is of transformation happening in real time. The title means "becoming," and the piece enacts that literally: it opens in quiet introspection, almost tentative, a single piano voice testing the air, and by the midpoint it has become something enormous and declarative. The strings don't so much ornament the piano as metabolize it, until the two feel indistinguishable, one continuous body of sound. Emotionally it operates through controlled accumulation — no single moment announces itself as the peak, yet you realize you've been climbing all along. There's a quality of inevitability to it, like watching dawn arrive: the light was always coming, but you still feel startled when it does. This is music for transitions — the end of a long period, the beginning of something you can't yet name.
