The tempo is brisk but not frantic, and this distinction matters: frantic music announces panic, while this music enacts it, pulling the listener into momentum rather than describing it from outside. The ticking clock motif that runs through the Dunkirk score surfaces here as a structural rather than decorative element — the pulse underneath everything, indifferent to outcome. Brass figures emerge and disappear, never completing a phrase before being overtaken by the next idea. What's unusual is how the piece refuses to build to a conventional climax; it maintains a kind of plateau of intensity that becomes its own form of exhaustion.
